If you have ever spotted a dense, dark green row of evergreens lining a property, there is a good chance you were looking at Eastern Red Cedars. These trees are workhorses when it comes to creating privacy, and they happen to thrive in our local climate with very little fuss.
The Eastern Red Cedar is one of our favorite trees to plant for homes and businesses looking to create a natural privacy fence or barrier. Let us explain why!
Why Eastern Red Cedars as a Privacy Tree?
The Eastern Red Cedar (Juniperus virginiana) grows in a dense, columnar shape that holds its foliage all the way to the ground. That means no bare trunks at the base and no gaps in your green wall.
It stays full and green every single month of the year.
Here is what makes them stand out as a privacy screen:
- Dense growth from the ground up with no bare spots
- Year-round evergreen coverage, even in winter
- When spaced 6 to 8 feet apart, they form a solid living wall
- No rotting, warping, or staining like a wood fence
- Far more attractive than vinyl or chain link
According to the Arbor Day Foundation, Eastern Red Cedars grow 1 to 2 feet per year and eventually reach heights of 40 to 50 feet. Most homeowners start seeing real privacy within 3 to 5 years of planting. You can buy and install cedars that are several years old to get a headstart and cut down on the wait.
Eastern Red Cedars in South Carolina
One of the main reasons we recommend this tree so often is how well it handles what our region throws at it.
It does not need babying. It does not need perfect soil.
The South Carolina Forestry Commission lists the Eastern Red Cedar as one of the most adaptable native trees in the state, with successful growth documented in all 46 counties. It handles:
- Summer heat and drought
- Heavy clay soil
- Poor or rocky ground
- Ice storms and wind
Encourage Wildlife in Your Yard
Because the Eastern Red Cedar is native, it also supports local wildlife in ways that non-native species cannot. The University of Georgia Extension reports that Eastern Red Cedar provides critical winter habitat and food for more than 50 species of birds, including cedar waxwings, mockingbirds, and yellow-rumped warblers. The blue berry-like cones from female trees are a key food source when other options run dry.
Eastern Red Cedar Maintenance
After the first season or two of watering while roots get established, these trees are largely on their own. That is a big deal for busy homeowners and commercial properties.
Here is what you can stop worrying about once they are in the ground:
- Regular fertilizing
- Pest treatments
- Pruning to maintain shape
- Irrigation once mature
They are also deer-resistant, which matters for properties backing up to wooded areas. The NC State Extension rates Eastern Red Cedar as one of the more deer-resistant evergreen options for planting in the Southeast.
Important Things to Know Before Planting Eastern Red Cedar
This tree is tough, but there are two things worth knowing before you plant.
First, Eastern Red Cedar is an alternate host for cedar-apple rust, a fungal disease that can affect apple and crabapple trees. If you have an orchard or ornamental crabapples nearby, keep your cedar screen at a reasonable distance or talk with an arborist about placement first.
Second, male trees release pollen in late winter that can aggravate seasonal allergies. If that is a concern, ask specifically for female trees. They produce the berries, hold pollen to a minimum, and are just as effective for privacy.
