Knowing you need a new lawn is one thing, but knowing the type of grass you want can be a bit more involved. Good news for South Carolina homeowners, we can help narrow it down a bit since we have been laying sod across the state for years!
TifTuf Bermuda
TifTuf Bermuda is one of the most popular warm-season grasses for homeowners looking for a durable, drought-tolerant lawn. It thrives in full sun and is known for its excellent wear resistance, making it ideal for families, pets, and high-traffic areas.
This variety also requires less water than many other Bermuda grasses, which can help reduce irrigation needs during hot South Carolina summers. Keep in mind that like most Bermudas, it goes dormant and turns brown in the winter months.
Zeon Zoysia
Zeon Zoysia is a premium sod option known for its fine blade texture and dense, carpet-like appearance. It offers a beautiful, lush lawn with strong resistance to weeds due to its thickness.
Zoysia varieties like Zeon perform well in both full sun and partial shade, making them a versatile choice for many properties in the Upstate. While it establishes more slowly than Bermuda, the long-term aesthetic and durability make it a favorite among homeowners seeking a high-end look.
Zenith Zoysia
Zenith Zoysia is another excellent option, particularly for those who want a balance between durability and lower maintenance. It is slightly more tolerant of cooler temperatures compared to other warm-season grasses, which makes it a solid fit for northern parts of South Carolina.
Zenith also offers moderate shade tolerance and requires less frequent mowing than Bermuda, making it a practical choice for homeowners who want a manageable, attractive lawn.
Fescue
Fescue is a cool-season grass that remains green year-round in South Carolina, making it a popular choice for homeowners who prefer consistent color, even during the winter.
It performs best in areas with partial shade and cooler conditions, which are common in the Upstate. However, fescue does require more water and maintenance during the hot summer months, and it may struggle in full sun without proper irrigation.
Centipede Grass
Centipede grass is often considered a low-maintenance option, but it tends to perform better in the southern and coastal regions of South Carolina. Here in the Upstate, we’re a bit too far north for centipede to consistently thrive, especially during colder winters.
While it can work in certain situations, it’s generally not our top recommendation compared to more adaptable options like Bermuda or Zoysia.
St. Augustine Grass
St. Augustine is best suited for coastal areas of South Carolina, where warmer temperatures and higher humidity create ideal growing conditions. It has a thick, coarse texture and performs well in sandy soils.
In the Upstate, however, it can struggle with colder temperatures and is more susceptible to winter damage. For that reason, it’s typically not the best fit unless you’re located closer to the coast.
